I remember thinking that the 5.9 was such a powerhouse motor. It wasn’t. torque was good but that’s about it. In the Jeep it was only a 25 hp bump from the 5.2 at 245 hp. Felt pretty fast though, 345 lbs-ft will do that I guess. Even still, when Toyota was doing getting a lazy 235 hp and 320 lbs-ft from 4.7L that same year it’s hard to see the 5.9 as a real monster.

Dodge could have done that but the 5.9 is ancient. Their 4.7L in the next-gen Dakota was pushing 260/310.

I realize it was the end of the line. I guess I was just reminiscing about when the 5.9 limited came out how it felt like that was such a hot rod then.

Like the 4.0L in the Jeep when it was new was amazing, but 177hp from 4.0L is ghastly today.

yup, I had an 91 and thought “what! 190 hp from only 4.0 liters!” our big suburban [88] barely makes more than that from 5.7 liters! It didn’t hurt that with the 5 speed it FELT like a lot of power for such a small car. Man that thing towed a trailer well.

I still want a red regular cab RT Dakota.
